It’s easy to forget what you are worth.
Someone reminded me very recently that you should never underestimate your abilities and never undervalue your worth. And it’s something that has been rattling through my brain ever since they said it.
As a freelancer, you go through peaks and troughs of work. Sometimes you’re lucky enough to secure yourself a long contract or have the work pouring in, other times you are lay sleepless at night thinking you actually have nothing planned in the near or far future in relation to work. And it can make you make crazy decisions. It can make you devalue your craft and take work that is underpaid, where you’re overworked and undervalued for your skill.
Any art form is a skill, and it doesn’t matter if you love what you do and it doesn’t feel like work. It still IS work. And you should get paid a proper wage.
There is no way a builder would change his rates just because he has a quiet month. So why should singing or dancing or whatever it is you do be any different?
So only take work that is worth it to you. Will it make your C.V look better? Does it allow you to add another skill to you bow? Will you be paid what you should be and treated with respect? If the answer to any of these is no, then don’t do it. You are talented enough to wait it out for something that is worthy of you to come along. And believe me, you will find it. Have a little faith in yourself and your ability. Because that project would be lucky to have you.
As a person, you often allow people in your life to not treat you as you should be treated. You often hold on to people who are toxic to you just because they are your family or they have been in your life forever. Know your worth as a friend, as a partner and as a person. And believe me, as hard as it is, you will feel better when you don’t have to deal with what that person puts you through.
You are amazing. You have so much to give the world and the people around you and you should be valued for that.
